Today, the demand for terahertz wave is growing in medical, communication, security, remote sensing and so on.
Terahertz wave is safe to the human body and has the advantage of analyzing the type and condition of the target materials.
However, there is a problem that the output power of the terahertz wave is too low or the size of the facility is too large to be applied for real application.
Worldwide, many laboratories are developing a small and high-power terahertz generation technique that overcomes these limitations by utilizing various technologies such as lasers, semiconductors, accelerators, and vacuum devices.
We are developing a table-top and high-power terahertz generator based on free-electron laser technology. Our efforts are focused to develop high-performance, compact and cheap accelerator, undulator, and pulse modulator which are key parts of the free electron laser.
The free electron laser can generate coherent terahertz radiation tunable from the wide terahertz range of 0.5 to 1 THz. The target average power of the terahertz radiation is 1 W.
