On November 4, 2024, Korea Atomic Energy Institute(KAERI) had the pleasure of hosting the British delegation, headed by Chris Heffer, Director for Civil Nuclear at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). Accompanied by British Embassy in Seoul, the meeting was pivotal in reinforcing our shared commitment to carbon neutrality through advanced nuclear energy solutions.
KAERI President Dr. Han Gyu Joo and Director Heffer exchanged valuable insights on the future role of nuclear energy in carbon-free future. They also acknowledged the achievements in the field of nuclear research and development cooperation between Korea and the UK, including nuclear batteries for space application and nuclear facility decommissioning.
Both sides also identified potential areas for future expanded collaboration, such as nuclear fuel and innovative technologies like Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Advanced Modular Reactors (AMRs). To support this, discussions were held on strengthening the cooperative framework between KAERI and UK nuclear research institutions.
President Joo stated, “Nuclear energy is essential for achiving future decarbonization goals” and expressed anticipation for the creation of mutual synergies through expanded cooperation in nuclear research and development between Korea and the UK.
