In December 2024, Dr. Eunju Jun, Director of the International Cooperation and Business Division, was elected as the new Chair of the Generation IV International Forum (GIF) Education and Training Working Group (ETWG) and plans to serve for three years starting in 2025.
The GIF is the largest international joint research consortium in the field of next-generation nuclear research and development, launched in 2001. Currently, experts from 14 countries, including South Korea, the United States, France, Japan, and the United Kingdom, participate in this forum. The Generation IV nuclear systems discussed in this forum are future nuclear systems designed to enhance sustainability—improving safety, economic competitiveness, and waste minimization—compared to currently operating nuclear power plants. Sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFR), very high-temperature reactors (VHTR), and molten salt reactors (MSR) are classified as Generation IV nuclear systems.
The Education and Training Working Group, established in October 2015, plays a role in expanding the base for Generation IV nuclear systems through international joint education and training programs and serving as a communication platform between research institutes.
Dr. Eunju Jun, who majored in nuclear and quantum engineering, is recognized as an expert in international nuclear policy. She has gained experience in both theory and practice, including serving as a Science and Technology Attaché at the Permanent Mission to Vienna, where she was involved with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the international nuclear non-proliferation regime and nuclear diplomacy. She stated, "During my term as Chair, I will focus on fostering professionals for the development of next-generation nuclear systems, enabling more experts to advance into international organizations."
