On August 31, 2026, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) welcomed a delegation from Uganda as part of the country’s efforts to explore nuclear energy development and strengthen its nuclear infrastructure.

The delegation included senior officials from Uganda’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) and other government agencies and institutions, including Mr. Simon Tebasulwa Kalanzi, Commissioner of Nuclear Energy, and Ms. Cecilia Menya, Commissioner of the Electric Power Department.

During the meeting, KAERI Acting President Lim In-cheol introduced KAERI’s role and major R&D activities and exchanged views with the delegation on Uganda’s nuclear energy development and potential areas for future cooperation.

The visit was part of the delegation’s benchmarking program focused on Korea’s nuclear sector as Uganda moves forward with its plans to introduce nuclear power. The two sides discussed the importance of developing nuclear R&D capabilities and human resources to support the country’s long-term nuclear energy program.

Following the meeting, the delegation toured ATLAS (Advanced Thermal-Hydraulic Test Loop for Accident Simulation), KAERI’s large-scale thermal-hydraulic test facility for nuclear safety research.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity for KAERI and Uganda to enhance mutual understanding and explore future cooperation in nuclear science and technology.
