Mr William Magwood, Director General of the OECD/NEA visits KAERI

Mr. William D. Magwood, IV, Director-General of OECD/NEA, paid a visit to KAERI on May 15th, 2023, and engaged in discussions with Dr. Han Gyu JOO, President of KAERI, regarding cooperation between the two organizations in various fields of nuclear research.

One of the topics discussed was the OECD/NEA’s joint R&D projects on nuclear safety for large NPPs and SMRs, which aim to develop new technologies and methods for ensuring the safety of nuclear facilities. This project is of utmost importance given the potential risks associated with nuclear energy and the need to ensure the safety of both workers and the general public. Another area of focus was the Framework for Irradiation Experiments (FIDES) program, which involves the testing of new materials and fuel rods for use in nuclear reactors. This program is critical for developing safer, more efficient, and sustainable nuclear energy systems, and Nuclear Education, Skills and Technology (NEST) program was also discussed, which is NEA’s capacity building program for next-generation nuclear researchers. As for the KAERI’s Voluntary Contribution plan to OECD/NEA, Mr. Magwood expressed his appreciation for the valuable contributions made by KAERI experts and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between the two organizations.

As part of his visit, Mr. Magwood will also attend the international workshop on disruptive technologies for nuclear safety applications organized by the OECD/NEA, KAERI and KNS, which will be held on May 16-17, 2023, in Jeju ICC. This workshop will provide an opportunity for experts from around the world to share their knowledge and expertise on nuclear safety and innovation.
